dc.description.abstract The aim of this research was to explore the factors that determine the progression of asylum seekers living in direct provision, into further education. This study focused on the effects of living in the direct provision on the educational experiences and the progression options that are currently available to asylum seekers. The research considers that there is a significant research gap in relation to the educational experiences of asylum seekers in Ireland and there is little know their experiences of guidance counselling. Thus, it is important to understand the issues they face and how it implicates guidance counselling practice. It is important to understand this topic, as asylum seekers are one of the most vulnerable groups in society, due to the situations in which they fled and the circumstances they find themselves in Ireland. An interpretive paradigm was used to conduct semi-structured interviews with six asylum seekers that are currently living in direct provision in Ireland. Braun and Clarke (2006) thematic data analysis was used to analysis the data. The findings identify that direct provision can have a negative effect on the educational experiences of asylum seekers. It also highlights the need for guidance counsellors to have more awareness of the situations of this group to improve the area of practice. This thesis concluded with recommendations for further research to be carried out in this area. en_US
