The Eighteenth-Century Research Group has been established to undertake interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research into the ‘long’ eighteenth century (c. 1650-1830). It draws on existing research strengths across Colleges and Departments at the University of Limerick and Mary Immaculate College, and seeks to expand on these by fostering collaboration.

It provides a forum for Limerick-based researchers (staff, post-doctoral and postgraduate), and facilitates the consolidation and expansion of links with scholars based at institutions throughout Ireland and abroad.

The group organises a seminar series on both campuses, attracting guest speakers of national and international standing. Its research brief extends to all aspects of language, culture, society and scientific endeavour. Projects may be local, regional, national or international in focus. Current research themes include: ‘communication’; ‘social change and the frontiers of the state’; ‘enlightenment, improvement, and innovation’; ‘immigration/emigration, translation, and the intercultural’; and ‘identities, popular culture, and society’.
